How to Step Away from Your Devices

Georgia Dunstan-Brown

With technology and screens being in our constant environment, it can be hard to limit their use. We’re always told to take a break, and rid yourself of screens completely, but what if it’s your job?

According to Rewire, the average adult will be on a screen close to 11 hours a day and will check their phone every 10 minutes.

Outside of work (or perhaps even at work), it has become a natural thing to rely on screens to fill those gaps in the day where you’re bored, procrastinating, or multi-tasking. A notification gives you anxiety and whenever your phone buzzes, you instantly reach for your phone. Sadly, it’s becoming a normal and unhealthy behavior.

The world moves at such a fast pace. In a season where everyone is marketing their ideas about relaxation, buying experiences “you’ll never forget”, or pushing products that “you can’t miss out on”; it makes it hard to take a breather and enjoy life as it’s supposed to be.

How do you get away from it all?

If you work a 9-5 and are on a computer all day, obviously you can’t  not use your computer at work, but there are ways to make sure you take a break when needed:

- Break up your day by only checking social media or the news at lunch time or a specified time. This helps ensure that you’re not constantly checking it throughout the day, which eventually will help your productivity as you’re not being constantly distracted.

- Remove all screens from your bedroom as it can disturb sleep patterns. This includes mobile phones.

- If you’re at work, divert your gaze every 30 minutes or so. Stretch your neck, stand up and stretch, just ensure that your eyes are getting a break.

- Limit your out of work screen time as this is the time you can control. Do something different, like exercise or try a new hobby etc.

It’s definitely hard to reduce screen time when they’re constantly around us. Since they’re not going to go away, reduce them where you can. You’ll sleep better and have more time for things that actually matter.

It’s about finding that work-to-life balance, leave work at work, or if you work remotely, schedule time in your day for working so that you can have that balance too.
